Squirrel
The silver latch on the windowsill reflected a guided beam of light obtruding directly onto my eyelids burning little triangle tattoos into my skin. I awoke swiftly leaping toward the window to close the blinds. Through the little rectangles I could see the back 60 acres of the farm. A quiescent squirrel lay next to a splayed pile of nuts. He got greedy, I presume, and fell out of the old willow tree next to the pond where I used to catch polliwogs. The luscious nuts must have aroused another squirrel. With in a few moments the other squirrel quickly ran over to the pile of nuts. The new squirrel started munching on the nuts. He took over the other squirrels nuts as if the other squirrel never mattered and it usurped the other’s life.
I lowered the blinds and my silhouette on the opposite wall disappeared. I slowly walked back to bed and fell asleep again. After what seemed to be a month I woke up. I walked downstairs. I fumbled around the cabinets until I found BRAN BOMB cereal. I always had a bowl in the morning it seemed to be salubrious. Once my spoon started to scrape the bottom of the bowl, I dipped my spoon into the large vat of marmalade sitting next to the ketchup in the center of the table.
I picked up the phone that was lying on the table next to my New York Times. I dialed the number for the airline. After a few short moments a pleasant lady answered the line.
“Hello, sir, thank you for calling United Airway Services. I would be pleased to provide excellent service for you today.”
” Let’s me make this succinct.” I said. ” I want to book a flight to Indonesia, no matter the price.”
“We would be happy to accommodate you sir, just hold for a second while I book your ticket.” She said.
The lady came back on the line and gave me a confirmation number. I wrote it down on the corner of the New York Time’s business section.
After breakfast I walked out to my workshop in the backyard. I pulled a new shiny tank from inside my locked trunk. It was the newest scuba tank on the market, made of some new amalgam stronger than titanium. This tank was capable of diving to depths that few divers have ever reached, that is if my body is strong enough not to collapse and suppurate all kinds of human crap everywhere.
